The majority of homes in rural areas are equipped with an underground septic system. If you have a Septic System, all the water from your toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, sinks and baths drains into your Septic Tank. The tank is connected to a “drain field”, also called a “leach field”, “leach drain”, “seepage pit”, or “soil absorption field”.
Solid waste materials from the raw sewage settle to the bottom and remain in the septic tank, while the waste water flows out of the tank into the drain field. Here the water is filtered through the soil, where bacteria naturally breaks down any remaining solids in the water. By the time the water drains through the layers of earth in the field, it is clean and safe for the environment.
Your Drain Field can fail if too much water is flushed into it faster than it can be absorbed into the soil. You’ll know there’s a problem when you have a soggy or stinky area in your yard above the drain field. If this happens, it can become a bio hazard. Be sure to keep children and pets out of that area until the problem has been repaired.
