Cupping therapy is a holistic medical treatment that relies upon creating a local suction to mobilize blood flow in order to promote healing.
This suction is created by using a pump to remove air from a cup to create a vacuum, enabling the cup to suck the skin, pulling in soft tissue, and drawing blood to that area.
At "Acupuncture", we typically use this treatment for upper respiratory infections, such as bronchitis, colds and pneumonia. However, it can also be used for pain relief and we will work with you to determine the best options for you.
Cupping works by applying suction through a glass jar (called a cup), in which a partial vacuum has been created. The size and number of cups placed will depend on the condition being treated.
This technique produces a congestion of blood in the area which in turn stimulates the movement of fresh blood to the surface. While cupping is usually painless, it may leave red marks that resemble bruising.
These marks typically fade within a day or two. Most people describe the experience as a “weight lifted off their shoulders”, usually right after a session of cupping.
In a typical cupping session, glass cups are warmed using a cotton ball or other flammable substance, which is soaked in alcohol, then placed inside the cup. Burning a substance inside the cup removes all the oxygen, which creates a vacuum.
As the substance burns, the cup is turned upside-down so that the practitioner can place the cup over a specific area. The vacuum created by the lack of oxygen anchors the cup to the skin and pulls it upward on the inside of the glass as the air inside the jar cools.
Drawing the skin up is believed to open up the skin’s pores, which helps to stimulate the flow of blood, balances and realigns the flow of qi, breaks up obstructions and creates an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body.
We use different types of cupping therapy to cure different ailments such as:
* Cellulite Cupping
* Facial Cupping
* Foot Cupping
* Abdominal Cupping
* TMJ and Sinus Release Cupping
* Orthopedic Cupping
* Detoxification Cupping
* Lymphatic Drainage Cupping
The idea behind cupping therapy is that there are certain points on the body where energy flows. The suction from the cups penetrates deep into the skin and muscle triggering the lymphatic system by stretching the skin and clearing the blood vessels.
